When I first read Colossians 3:2, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth,” it struck me deeply. It’s a simple instruction, yet it challenges the way I had been living for years. Like many, I chased success, promotions, and material gains, believing they would bring lasting peace. But the truth I discovered is that peace does not come from earthly achievements. It comes from focusing on what truly matters—our faith, purpose, and connection with God.

The Endless Chase for Success
I remember a man I once knew who spent his entire adult life chasing success. He climbed the corporate ladder, earned raises, and accumulated wealth. On paper, he was winning. Yet, every night he felt a hollow emptiness. The next goal always seemed bigger, and peace never stayed long enough to enjoy the victories.
It's a story that mirrors many of our lives. Yet we set our minds on earthly things—money, status, possessions—thinking they will fill the void. But the more we focus on these things, the more restless we become. The bar keeps rising, and satisfaction slips further away.
What Does It Mean to Set Your Mind on Things Above?
Setting your mind on things above means shifting your focus from temporary, material goals to eternal, spiritual values. It means prioritizing your relationship with God, your faith, and your purpose beyond this life.
This shift is not about ignoring responsibilities or ambitions. Instead, it’s about aligning your heart and mind with what lasts. When your thoughts dwell on God’s promises and His purpose for you, your perspective changes. You begin to see success differently—not as a trophy to win but as a byproduct of living according to His will.
Practical Ways to Shift Your Focus
Daily Reflection: Spend time each day reading scripture or meditating on spiritual truths. This helps redirect your thoughts from daily worries to eternal hope.
Prayer for Guidance: Ask God to help you see what truly matters and to remove distractions that pull you away.
Simplify Priorities: Evaluate your goals and activities. Are they aligned with your faith and values? Adjust where needed.
Serve Others: Focusing on helping others can shift your mind from self-centered ambitions to meaningful impact.
How This Shift Brings Peace
When the man in the story finally understood this verse, he stopped chasing after fleeting success. Instead, he focused on God’s purpose for his life. His priorities changed. Life slowed down. Peace arrived—not because his circumstances changed overnight, but because his mind was set on things above.
Peace comes when your heart is anchored in something unshakable. Earthly achievements can be lost or taken away, but spiritual peace remains steady. It guards your heart even in difficult times.

Aligning Your Thoughts with God’s Purpose
I have found that aligning my thoughts with God’s purpose requires intentional effort. It’s easy to get distracted by daily stresses or worldly desires. But when I pray, “Lord, help me focus on what truly matters,” I remind myself to pause and reset.
This alignment is not a one-time event. It’s a daily choice to:
Let go of worries about status or possessions
Embrace humility and gratitude
Trust God’s plan even when it’s unclear
Seek joy in serving and loving others
By doing this, my mind stays on the right target. I experience a peace that no promotion or paycheck can provide.
Carry This Today
Remember, what you focus on grows. If your mind dwells on stress, fear, or material success, those areas will dominate your life. But if you set your mind on things above, peace and purpose will grow stronger.
Take a moment now to reflect:
What are you focusing on most?
Are your thoughts aligned with your faith and values?
What distractions can you remove to keep your eyes on the right target?

Life is a journey of choices. Choosing to set your mind on things above is choosing lasting peace over temporary gain. It’s a choice I encourage you to make today.
Prayer to carry with you:
